Materials needed:
Large white paper
Oil pastels
Coloured crayons
Markers
Description of the Tool:
Step 1: The educator explains to the students that together they will be making a paper village.
Step 2: The paper is taped to the wall or laid on the ground. The educator asks one student to draw a horizontal line on the paper so it is clear where is the ground and where is the sky.
Step 3: In turns, the students will draw different features that they think there should be in the village. Once all students, have had at least one turn, the educator can ask the students whether there are other things that they would like to include.
Step 4: Once the students are satisfied with the paper village, the educator will ask; whether the village includes everything they can think of’, ‘Whether there might be things needed but that are not included’, ‘Whether they thought about flowers and trees’, ‘Whether there will be rivers, oceans, seas’, ‘Whether there should be buildings’, ‘What work will be available in the village’.
Tips for educators
This activity can be further adapted to discuss about roles in the village to. These roles can mirror the roles that are found in the host country such as police, doctors, teachers, hawkers and so on. The students can be asked to describe whether their ideal village resembles their home country and what of their home country would they like to see in their host country.
